“The mission of the EPA,” according to its own statement, “is to protect human health and the environment.” However, since the swearing in of Lee Zeldin as Administrator on January 29, 2025, the EPA has embarked on a path leading to the destruction of human health and the environment.
Zeldin’s EPA is working to rip out the heart of the Agency by rolling back: the core Endangerment Finding of 2009 that greenhouse gases pose a threat to public health and welfare; the Mercury and Air Toxic Standards, eliminating stricter limits on emissions from coal-fired power plants; greenhouse gas caps for coal- and gas-fired power plants; 31 key environmental rules, from engine emissions to air quality standards; the Office of Research and Development; all eleven environmental justice offices. The 144 employees who protested these moves have been disciplined. (Evidence for the unmaking of the EPA is here.)
These actions constitute the most consequential and most devastating assault on the EPA in its fifty-five-year history. And it is all done in the interests of the oil and gas industry.
Of all the many crimes of the Trump regime the attack on the climate, in particular through the corruption of agencies like the EPA, will turn out to be the most consequential and far-reaching.
Strategy and Demands
Since Zeldin’s EPA is no longer working for the American people—since it is working against the American people—it should not be permitted to work at all until it recommits to its founding mission.
We must revive the EPA.
Administrator Zeldin must
preserve the Endangerment Finding
restore the Office of Research and Development and reinstate all 1100 scientists
reopen all environmental justice offices and reinstate all 200 staffers.
reinstate all 139 EPA “dissidents"
or he must be removed.
Tactics
Restoring the EPA is a long-term campaign. The tactics will escalate over time and spread to include all 10 regional EPA offices in addition to the D.C. headquarters.
